Mental Math is a quick way to practise arithmetic at any age. Choose addition, subtraction, multiplication, division or a mixed round, pick one of five difficulty levels, then answer twenty questions as fast and accurately as you can. When the round ends you can add your name to the high-score table for that topic and level.

What Mental Math does

Choose a topic and a difficulty level and press Start practice. You get twenty questions; each one shows a sum such as 7 + 8, 15 − 6, 7 × 8 or 56 ÷ 7. Type the answer and press Submit or Enter to move on. A running clock and a progress bar show how far along you are.

Topics and levels

There are five topics: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division and Mixed practice, which rotates through all four operations. The five levels grow with the learner and roughly match these ages: level 1, ages 0–6; level 2, ages 7–9; level 3, ages 10–12; level 4, ages 13–15; level 5, ages 16–18. Level 1 starts with sums up to 10 and factors up to 5; level 5 reaches sums up to 200 and factors up to 25. Topic and level together make the mode, and every one of the 25 modes keeps its own high-score table. Subtraction never goes below zero and division always divides exactly, so every answer is a whole number.

The test and scoring

A round is always twenty questions. Each correct answer scores one point, so a perfect run is 20 out of 20. The timer starts with the first question and stops on the last; ties on the high-score table are broken by the fastest total time.

Saving your score

When the round ends, type a name (up to 20 characters) and press Save score. Your name, score and time are sent to the server and added to that mode's board. You can then Practise again for another run or Change topic to try something else.

The high-score table

The board below the test shows the best ten runs for the selected topic and level. Use the two selectors to switch between them — for example addition at level 1 or mixed practice at level 4. Entries are ordered by score first and time second, so both accuracy and speed count. Your freshly saved run is highlighted. The scores live in a file on the server, so they are permanent and the same for every visitor — they do not depend on your session. Below the board, a ticker scrolls through the top three of every mode in turn, labelled with its operation and level, so you can see the strongest scores across all 25 boards at a glance.

Language and privacy

The interface is available in English, German, French, Italian and Spanish, chosen from the menu in the corner. Because your name and score are stored on the server to build the high-score tables, the app is marked blue (Server); the scores are kept in a file on the server, so they are permanent and the same for every visitor rather than tied to a session. Nothing else is collected and no account is needed. The counter in the corner is the same anonymous hit counter every tool in the suite uses. Questions or suggestions? Use the Feedback link — it opens the suite contact form with Mental Math pre-selected.
